“I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” at the Toronto IFF


     I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” / „Îmi este indiferent dacă în istorie vom intra ca barbari”, directed by Radu Jude, was selected in the section Contemporary World Cinema of the Toronto International Film Festival, which will take place from September 6 to 16, 2018.
     At the 43rd edition of the festival, based on the votes of the viewers the Best Feature Film Big Prize will be given and also the trophy of the International Federation of the Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
     Radu Jude`s feature has just recently received the Golden Mimosa Trophy for Best Screenplay, of the Herceg Novi Film Festival - Montenegro Film Festival. The motivation of the jury was: “The Best Screenplay Award goes to a unique filmmaker who is brave enough to keep us engaged and educate us with a script that has an unorthodoxly didactic but surprisingly accessible form, rarely used in modern cinema.His intellectual strength and historical insight are a perfect match for the civilizational significance of the painful and difficult subject matter from the past that resonates universally today.”
     The feature film won the Crystal Globe Big Trophy of 53rd edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this year and it represents Romania`s proposal to receive a nomination for the 2019 Oscars Gala, for the category “Best Film in a Foreign Language”.
     “I Do Not Care If We Go Down in History as Barbarians” tells the story of staging a historical reenactment (the massacre of Odessa from the Second World War) for a street performance.
     The film features Ioana Iacob, Alexandru Dabija, Alex Bogdan, Ilinca Manolache, Șerban Pavlu, Ion Rizea, Claudia Ieremia and Bogdan Cotleţ. The cinematography is signed by Marius Panduru (RSC), the editing by Cătălin Cristuțiu, the sound by Jean Umanski, the mixing by Cristinel Șirli, the sound design by Dana Bunescu and the production design and costumes by Iuliana Vîlsan. The producer is Ada Solomon and the co-producers are Jiří Konečný, Serge Lalou, Claire Dornoy, Rossitsa Valkanova, Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski and Maren Ade. Holger Stern is the associate producer.
     The film will be distributed in the Romanian cinemas by microfilm, starting with September 28, 2018.
