Absolvent al Facultăţii de Litere a Universităţii Bucureşti în 1947, membru corespondent al Academiei Române, laureat al Premiului Herder pentru literatură. În 1966 începe seria de filme Haiducii, în care rolurile principale sunt interpretate de Florin Piersic şi Marga Barbu.
