Programme of Romanian Cinematheque (2-11 May 2017)

For the first part of May, the Romanian Cinematheque scheduled two of the latest Romanian films: Vara s-a sfârșit / End of Summer (directed by Radu Potcoavă) and  Varză, cartofi și alți demoni / Cabbage, Potatoes and Other Demons (directed by Șerban Georgescu).
End of Summer, the third feature film by director Radu Potcoavă, was internationally premiered at the Montréal International Film Festival at the end of August 2016, and on 5 May it will be released in Romanian movie theatres. The action of the film is set in a small town on the Danube's banks, during the summer holiday, when Mircea (Nicholas Bohor) accepts to help Alex (Dan Hurduc) to stage his own kidnapping and to blackmail his absentee father, not realising the consequences of such games. The shootings were made in the summer of 2015, in Cernavodă town, and AaRC team was present on location and talked to a part of the crew's members.
Cabbage, Potatoes and Other Demons was internationally premiered at the Leipzig – Dok Leipzig International Documentary and Animation Film Festival, in November 2016. The documentary tries to approach an issue of the Romanian agriculture: the producers, small land owners, are struggling to survive from a harvest to the other, circulating money they do not have, for an output that does not even cover their costs. Such small producers cannot afford to drop their prices to the level the supermarkets are forcing them to, and when they must do it, they find themselves losing money. What could they do in such a situation? Although the idea of a cooperative or association is stated directly, the documentary by Șerban Georgescu does not impose solutions, but follows, for the duration of a year, the factors causing such a blockage in Lungulețu, where the locals would not hear of producing anything but cabbage and potatoes.
