„A Mere Breath” – an interview with Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan
by Andra Petrescu, Dana Medar
A Mere Breath (directed by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan) had the world premiere at the Visions du Réel Film Festival (15-23 april 2016) and the national premiere at the 2016 Transilvania International Film Festival, in June. It will also be part of the documentary competition at the Sarajevo Film Festival (12-20 august 2016).
Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan went to Copșa Mică after winning a short film documentary competition on environmental topics, organized and financed by the Soros Foundation. “I wanted to go to Copșa because it was one of the most polluted towns in Romania and when the plant was functioning, according to some studies, it was the most polluted town in Europe. I wanted to see the stories of the people who lived there, to focus on the environmental issue through the lenses of those who lived there. I saw many families, but when I met them, I instantly knew they would be the characters of my film. I made the documentary for the foundation and then I decided to continue with their story, because I found that what happened there was very complex, especially with the father, the head of the family. I was very challenged by the moral dilemma and by the drama from their family.
Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan spent seven years close to the Sicrea family, in order to make this documentary. While being at TIFF 2016, the director gave us an interview and explained to us how the work process of this film was and how she relates to it. A Mere Breath can be watched on HBO Romania and on the HBO GO online platform starting this autumn.
