„The
Political Film Club intends to follow, through a series of screenings and weekly debates, the various directions of the political cinema along the time, and to incite talks on the issues raised by the representation of social and political subjects. Thus, we are trying to recover a tradition of reflection on involved cinema and to (re)discover the means through which film may contribute to a better understanding and transformation of society,” the project's initiators stated.
Old and New (The General Line), the fourth feature film by Serghei Eisenstein, is a maturity film of the Soviet editing school. It tries to substitute to the imaginary imposed by Hollywood films (associated ever since then with passivity and reaming, as well as with a cult for stars) another type of representation, more appropriate to the new Soviet society. The protagonist of Eisenstein's film, Marfa, is a poor but strong peasant woman, who is struggling to get out of the desperate situation she is in. She tries to convince her fellow villagers that work in Association is much more productive and that a Cooperative must be set up, but she meets with a lot of distrust.
