The award will be handed out to director Maren Ade at the opening gala of the San Sebastian Film Festival (Spain), on 16 September. It is the first time this distinction goes to a production directed by a woman.
Shot almost entirely on location in Romania, it is the only cinema production released in 2016 included recently in
TOP 100 21st Century's greatest films by BBC Culture, representing
also the Germany's proposals to the Academy Awards. Furthermore, the famous American publication
Indiewire regards the film as a serious candidate to the title of Best Foreign Language Film.
The film tells the story of Winfried, an eccentric father, recently retired and prone to pranks, who decides to pay a surprise visit to his daughter, Ines, a serious career woman who works on an important project, as corporatist strategist in Bucharest.
Toni Erdmann will be released on
21 October in Romanian theatres, being distributed by microFILM.
