“Charging the Rhino”, special screening at Cinematheque Eforie

On Monday, 10 October, starting at 19:00, Eforie (Jean Georgescu) Hall of the Romanian Cinematheque in Bucharest (2 Eforie Street) will host a free-of-charge admission event on the occasion of the National Day of Holocaust Commemoration (9 October).
The documentary film Charging the Rhino (Canada production, 2007) will be screened, directed by Simcha Jacobovici. The film has a duration of 52 minutes and is subtitled in Romanian.
The screening of the documentary will be followed by a debate with historian Adrian Cioflâncă, director of the Romanian Centre for Jewish History Studies, and with Dr. Alexandru Florian, director of the “Elie Wiesel” National Institute for the Study of Holocaust in Romania
Charging the Rhino is a personal complex exploration of one of our history's darkest moments. Simcha Jacobovici, Canadian director born in Romania, returns to his country of origin to better understand the roots of his father, Iosif. Brought together with his relatives to be executed in the courtyard of the police station in Iaşi, Iosif was shot during the days of the pogrom in June, 1941. However, he miraculously survived due to the cord contraction, but the bullet stayed in his chest all his life. Several years afterwards, his father left Romania for good. Jacobovici cousin, Saşa, had an even more bizarre fate: though he survived the war, he was sentenced to death by his communist comrades, not before being forced to make an appearance in a propaganda film. There are no images documenting the assassination of Iosif family during the Holocaust, but there are images from Sașa's trial in 1960, in a police reconstruction of a robbery to which he allegedly took part. The film creates a mirror image of the two destinies, of the father and of the cousin, as well as of the two systems governing Romania after 1940: the fascist regime and the communist regime.
