Justice, Education and LGBTQ Community Rights at One World Romania 11

The 11th edition of the One World Romania International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival takes place from March, 16 until 25, 2018 in Bucharest.
This year`s edition also approaches topics that are intensely discussed. Justice systems, updating education methods and rethinking the “family” concept by contemporary criteria – all of these are highly debated topics in the media and they fuel up emotions and debates in our country and all over the world. This is the reason why this 11th edition will take a close look at these issues, dedicating special sections to each of them.
You can talk about justice in many ways, which is proven by the film selection for the Facing the law section. The selected documentaries intend to diversify the public discourse regarding this subject, inviting the audience to analyze what works and what doesn`t work in other parts of the world.
The Trial: The State of Russia vs. Oleg Sentsov (directed by Askold Kurov) follows step by step the evolution of the director Oleg Sentsov`s trial, for supposed “acts of terrorism”; the main character is crushed by the justice system.
The section Politics of Sex includes films that display the struggle for sexual minorities rights and focus on the activist methods used, hoping to provoke a greater deal of involvement for supporting their cause in Romania as well.
Queerama (directed by Daisy Asquith) captures the activist battles in Great Britain, through the iconography associated by the British cinema to the LGBTQ people in the last decades. It also presents prejudice which seems to belong to the past in the UK, but unfortunately is still very present in Romania.
In many places and in Romania as well, the educational system is old and it is not keeping up with the social evolution of the 21st century and with the specific needs of the new generations. The films that approach this topic can be watched in the section Education in the 21st century.
The observational documentary Childhood (directed by Margaret Olin) follows the everyday activities of a group of children enrolled in a kindergarten where the teachers act as if they had the same age as the children and “the subjects” that they are taught are closely related to their usual existence in the middle of nature.
Other main sections and special events and surprises from the One World Romania 2018 will soon be revealed on the website www.oneworld.ro and on the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/one.world.romania
