“Ovidiu Gologan started his artistic journey in 1936 as an apprentice to Amedee Morin and Iosif Bertok and he made his debut in documentary filmmaking in 1940 (Derbiul de la Băneasa); he then became a war correspondent, a co-author of the films România contra bolşevismului and Războiul nostru sfânt and on the 1st of June 1946 he was the only cameraman allowed to film the execution of Marshal Antonescu. An artist of varied interests, Ovdiu Gologan has a biography considered by his biographer to be «impressive» not only as a consequence of the variety of the subject matters he has approached, but also due to the large number of films for which he is credited as an assistant, screenwriter, director and director of photography.” (Călin Stănculescu)

  • The Grand Prize ACIN was awarded "for his entire artistic activity and his contribution to the development of Romanian cinematographic art".
  • In 1998 the monograph "Ovidiu Gologan" by Corneliu Medvedov is released as part of the series "Centenarul cinematografului românesc" / “The Centennial of Romanian Cinema” initiated by the Romanian Filmmakers’ Union (UCIN). - Cinetipar
Ovidiu Gologan on his esthetic credo:
„Light is a means equally important as color. There is no color without light. Each spotlight is an instrument in an orchestra. And just like all the instruments in an orchestra have to deliver a score, light too has to «sing» harmoniously. This, too, is, if you will, a symphony. […] For I’ve always seen a relation of interdependency between lighting, color and music. The correlation between the glow of the light and that of the shadow (yes, shadows can also have a special glow of their own!) and a harmonious arrangement of color spots and reflections can be tackled only with the help of a correct ratio between light and color. And color, just like music, gives depth to the ambiance, it highlights the atmosphere of a particular episode and it then turns into the state of mind of the characters.”
