Graduate of the “Emanuil Gojdu” High School in Oradea and of the Philology Faculty of the Bucharest University (class of 1953). During university he wrote short stories, many of which were co-written with Francisc Munteanu and published in “Viața românească”; later on they were collected in the book ”Mecanicul și alți oameni de azi” (1951). He made his writing debut with two books: “Povestiri” / “Short Stories” and the novel “Străinul” / “The Stranger” (1955). Corresponding member of the Romanian Academy (1974). Member of the Romanian Writers’ Union.
 

Trivia

  • His father, Augustin Popovici, was a clerk who worked at the Romanian Post, and his mother, Florica Popovici, was an elementary teacher.
  • Member of the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party.
  • His book, “Disciplina dezordinii” / “The Discipline of Disorder” - comprising memories of the writer about informal conversations between key members of the RCP held at the buffet of the Great National Assembly-, is published in 1998.
  • A fishing and hunting aficionado, he was also a contributor of “The Hunters’ and Fishermen’s Magazine”.
  • He died in 1994 in a car crash near Tulcea.
