Ştefan Mihăilescu-Brăila

Born out of a haphazard relationship between a nurse and a doctor, he grows up in his grandparents home, deprived of maternal love and care. As a teenager he works as a porter and hodman. Graduate of the Industrial High School in Braila and of the “G. Cavadia” Conservatory, class of 1947. He starts his career at the “Maria Filotti” Theatre in Braila (1949-1954), where there were two actors by the name of Stefan Mihailescu, so that he adds the name of Braila, his maternal grandmother’s name. Continues as an actor at the Theatre in Baia Mare (1956), then at the CFR Workers’ Theatre in Bucharest (1957) which later becomes the Giulesti Theatre, today “Odeon” Theatre.

Trivia

  • In January 1964 he is awarded the title of Merited Artist of the Popular Republic of Romania , by the State Council of the Popular Republic of Romania.
  • In 1967 he is awarded  the Order of the Cultural Merit (3d rank)
  • Actress Rodica Mandache publishes, in December 2010, a volume of interviews “An Atypical Book About an Atypical Actor- Stefan Mihailescu Braila”
  • In the gallery of the ODEON Theatre  is exposed the actor’s bust, made by sculptor Dragos Catalin Munteanu
