Cabbage, Potatoes and Other Demons / Varză, cartofi şi alţi demoni on Tuesady, May 29, 2018, from 20:00 at Reciproc, Mărășești street, no 14.
Cabbage, Potatoes and Other Demons / Varză, cartofi şi alţi demoni invites the viewers to Lunguleţu, a village near Bucharest, where year after year 1,000 farmers wait for their over 100,000 tons of cabbage to be sold on the local market.
By the end of the day they have to choose between selling their crop really cheap and burying it. Their story is similar to the one of the farmers from the entire country. We`ll find out the story from this documentary signed by the director
Şerban Georgescu, after personally experiencing “the life in the countryside.”
Intrigued by the fact that in exchange for 100 lei he received one ton of cabbage, the director decided to spend one year in this village and to work the land side by the side with the local farmers. He really wants to understand why these farmer families, that are apparently prosperous, live by debt, though they have everything they need for a successful business – fertile land, modern tools, rich crops. The mayor and a few villagers have some ideas and some possible solutions. But could they overcome their lack of confidence in any “collective” decision or any leader?

A satire of the current realities in the European agriculture, narrated by the director himself, the film tells form the inside the efforts of a village to get out of this vicious circle, presented in a typical Romanian style: grinning and bearing it.
Speaking about Cabbage, Potatoes and Other Demons, the producer Branko Lustig, winner of two Oscar Awards, commented: “I believe this is a very actual film, with a huge market potential.”
The documentary travelled the festivals quite a lot: the world premiere was at the Dok Leipzig, the oldest documentary festival in the world, then at the 2017 One World FF, Docudays (2017). It was also nominated for the 2017 Gopo Awards and 2017 UCIN Awards, where it received the Best Documentary Awards.
The film was co-produced by Elefant Film and Kolectiv Film, in partnership with TVR and it is distributed in Romania by Follow Art.
The price of a ticket is 10 lei and it can be bought at Reciproc, starting with Thursday, May 24, 2018.
