The image campaign of the 17th edition of the Transilvania International Film Festival remakes the poster and one of the iconic scenes from the Ingmar Bergman`s masterpiece
Persona, with the famous actresses
Maia Morgenstern and
Oana Pellea.
It is not only a tribute paid to the legendary Swedish filmmaker whose centennial is celebrated this year at TIFF by a retrospective and to his best-known masterpiece, named “the Mount Everest of cinematic analysis”, but also a visual campaign similar to the previous ones that the Cluj festival audience is already used to.
The knife-edge confrontation takes place between an actress who took refuge in silence (Liv Ulmann) and her nurse (Bibi Andersen) is the core of the black-and-white film directed by Ingmar Bergman in 1966. In 2018, Maia Morgenstern and Oana Pellea re-enact one of the key scenes of the film, representative for the interdependence relationship between the two characters and for the psychological vampirization that the film speaks about. It is a reverent interpretation, with an explicit Transylvanian twist to the vampire-victim psychological relationship of the two main characters.
“I accepted TIFF`s proposal for three reasons: this is a festival I have admired and supported since its first edition, I adore Ingmar Bergman and I adore Maia. I was thrilled with the final result of the shoot and it convinced me that once again I was right in taking up this challenge.” Oana Pellea said.
“It`s surprising”, Maia Morgenstern added. “For me this is the closing of a circle. It so happened that I first came across the script of
Persona while at the university, when I performed a scene from this great film for an exam – before I actually saw the film. Re-enacting this reference scene with Oana now, approaching it with humor, tenderness, reverence and the courage, was an important reminder of our love for cinema and for the craft of acting. This was all the more meaningful as it was related to TIFF, a festival as a celebration which means meeting film auteurs – both masters of the genre and fresh faces - on our home turf.”
The official TIFF trailer to be soon launched on the festival Facebook page features the two beloved actresses together on screen for the first time, as directed by the brothers Anton and Damian Groves of Studioset – who are in their fifth year of directing the visual campaign of the most important film event in Romania.
The trailer was produced by Adriana Răcășan and Libra Film with Andrei Oana as director of photography and the shooting took place at Studio 82, with equipment from Light&Grip and Cutare Film. Cosmin Bumbuț is the author of the poster photograph and Andrei Pastuhov, TIFF`s art director, signs the graphics. Nicole Cârnu was the costume designer, Natalia Clima took care of the make-up and Sebastian Serghe of the hair styling. The trailer was edited by Bogdan Orcula, the music is signed by Ștefan Crișan and the post-production was supervised by Călin Bogdacenco.
