Far from being used just as extras in movies, animals play an important role in some directors' visions. To them, the
Transylvania International Film Festival is dedicating this year a thematic section, under the title #Animal.

The relationship between man and animal, in its most diverse forms, from divinisation to exploitation, will be captured and displayed by 10 revealing films, proposed by TIFF artistic director, Mihai Chirilov. The films are competing for the FIPRESCI Award (the International Federation of Film Critics).
„The idea of a cine-zoo at TIFF was inspired to me by recent features where animals have key roles.
White God, Of Horses and Men, Dog, The Lobster and
Rams are only a few of them. What really interested me the most in making up of this traditional section, a true challenge given the thematic bet, were the various representations of animals in recent fiction and documentary features. In some of them, the animal is the triggering or revealing factor of the story (the dog in
Family Film, the bees in
Zero, the cow in
Holy Cow! or the parrot in
Lost in Munich). In other films, they are given proper leading roles, and

even the chance to verbalise their thoughts – i.e. the buffalo in
Lost and Beautiful, or the cow in
Animal Politico. Sometimes, they are like a mirror reflecting human nature, with all its distortions and resemblances, i.e. the bulls in
Neon Bull, the dog in
Heart of a Dog, or the elephant in
Tyke Elephant Outlaw. As for the relationship between the wolf and the heroine in
Wild, it has to be seen to be believed,”
Mihai Chirilov explained.
Transylvania International Film Festival (27 May – 5 June, 2016) is being organised by the Association for the Promotion of Romanian Film, and by the Association for the Transylvania Film Festival.
