Today, 4 October, 2016, at the National Library of Romania, took place the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Agreement for the purposes of setting up the EUROPALIA ROMÂNIA Festival (October 2019 – January, 2020).

On the Romanian part, the document was signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lazăr Comănescu, the Minister of Culture, Corina Ioana Şuteu, and the President of the Romanian Cultural Institute, Radu Boroianu. The signatories on the part of EUROPALIA INTERNATIONAL were Count Georges Jacobs de Hagen, President of EUROPALIA INTERNATIONAL, and Baroness Kristine De Mulder, General Director of EUROPALIA INTERNATIONAL.
The document makes official the status of our country as honorary guest country to the 27th Edition of EUROPALIA International Festival, obtained by Romania after completing, starting in 2014, the stages of the candidature process. According to the Memorandum, Romania's participation will involve “a minimum of 12 visual arts projects, of which two large dimensions exhibitions bringing into focus exceptional items of the Romanian heritage; 50 theatre, music and dance ensembles; an ample programme comprising literary manifestations, conferences and films; cultural residentships and new cultural products created for this festival.”
The Minister of Culture, Corina Şuteu, specified that “Romania's presence to EUROPALIA Festival is a huge occasion for encouraging and stimulating contemporary creativity and creation and for unifying the energies of those working for the preservation and valorification of our material and immaterial heritage. Romania's participation, as honorary guest country, to EUROPALIA 2019, a year when Romania is to hold the presidency of the European Union, has very important practical and symbolical significance to Romanian and European culture.”
EUROPALIA International Arts Festival is the biggest cultural manifestation in Belgium. Launched in Brussels in 1969, it represents an international biannual arts festival, bringing into focus the heritage and cultural diversity of a guest country.
