The 16th edition of the Transylvania International Film Festival (June 2-11, 2017, in Cluj) dedicates an ample retrospective to French director Jean – Pierre Melville, considered the forerunner of the French Nouvelle Vague and the one who wrote an unrepeatable chapter in the history of cinema.

The film fans will have the rare occasion to see six of the French maestro’s works, at the same time six of the best thrillers of the European Cinema, in restored prints:
Le Silence de la mer (1949),
Bob le flambeur (1955),
Léon Morin, prêtre (1961),
Le Doulos(1962),
L’armée des ombres (1969),
Le Cercle Rouge(1970), alături de scurtmetrajul
Vingt-quatre heures de la vie d’un clown (1946). The retrospective is organized in partnership with the French Institute.
A special personality of the French cinema, Jean-Pierre Melville (1917-1973, born Grumbach, he took the name of his favourite writer, Herman Melville) directed 13 features in 25 years, succeeding in detaching himself from the main stream of the time and imposing an unique style, influenced by the American Cinema of the 30s.
His working style, initially a low-budget one, always lacking compromise, and also his daring type of shooting on location won him the admiration of directors, initiators of the Nouvelle Vague, such as Jean-Luc Godard or Francois Truffaut as well as the title of perfect
auteur of the French
noir genre with gangsters of 50s and 60s.
His films influenced important directors such as John Woo, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Aki Kaurismaki, Quentin Tarantino.
