The new Cinepub premiere is the documentary
D About Iulian Mihu, the Way He Was. About Us, the Way We Are/Despre Iulian Mihu așa cum a fost. Despre noi așa cum suntem, directed by
Laurențiu Damian. The film is a mix of talking-heads and footages from the Romanian film archive, with film personalities, with nostalgic memories and behind the scene stories. A free spirit, an
avant-la-lettre pioneer, a special director, very careful with the human details. Iulian Mihu was one of the most important directors of the Romanian cinema, known for his relationship with the censorship, caused by his approaches which were way too sophisticated and formalist.
Laurențiu Damian`s intention was to bring to attention the Romanian film, and not only the present one, but also the one of the `50-`90 generations, by a series of documentaries meant to raise the attention and interest of the large audience and particularly the one of the students. “During those times, the dictatorship wanted and imposed the propaganda film. However, there were many films – based on literary masterpieces, or original scripts and even contemporary films – which were absolutely remarkable. These creations defined styles, aesthetics and personal poetics. In my opinion, bringing these films to discussion represents a cultural act.”
