Maeștrii suprarealismului Jan Švankmajer și Guy Maddin încheie BIEFF 2018
At the end of the 2018 BIEFF – Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival that takes place from March 26 until April 1, 2018 at the Peasant Museum Cinema And Elvire Popesco Cinema, two Romanian premieres will take place, two event-films will be screened: the latest feature films made by two avant-garde filmmakers, famous for their unique artistic vision: Jan Švankmajer with his Insect – a project that he couldn`t make in the 1970s because of the political censorship and Guy Maddin with The Green Fog, a free remake of Alfred Hitchcock`s Vertigo, an homage that he brings to the city of San Francisco.
The famous cult-director Jan Švankmajer presents us yet another highly compelling work that plays with the boundaries between animation and live-action, while also turning into a central subject the process of its own making. Insect intertwines the story of a group of actors rehearsing a version of a satirical play from the early 1920s written by the Čapek brothers, Karel and Josef; it features insects displaying human traits and it has sequences showing Švankmajer himself on set, while directing. Shortly after its international premiere at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Insects is screened in Romania for the first time, at the Closing Gala which will take part on Saturday, March 31, 2018, from 20:00, at the Peasant Museum Cinema, with the support of Athanor.
With The Green Fog, the directors Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson pay tribute to Hitchock`s film Vertigo: a dizzying assemblage of film and TV images, both familiar and unknown, all from the San Francisco Bay Area. After the international premiere in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival, the Romanian premiere takes place at BIEFF 2018, on Sunday, April 1, 2018, from 21:00, at the Peasant Museum Cinema, with the support of the Canadian Embassy in Romania and of the distributor, The Festival Agency. The Canadian director Guy Maddin is one of the favorite cult-authors of BIEFF which has presented during the previous editions, some of his other works: Keyhole and Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton.
