Reaching its 7th Edition, the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival BIEFF returns this year, between 28 March - 2 April, at Farmers' Museum Cinema and Cinema Elvire Popesco, presenting in national premiere the most innovative cinema experiments of the last year.
Set up under the sign of the Maya civilisation ancient salute IN LAK’ECH ALA K’IN – translated by YOU ARE ANOTHER ME – this year's edition invites the audience to an exercise in empathy, putting into discussion the ability of each of us to put each other in another person's shoes. We deem this endeavour as an acute necessity, especially today, in the light of recent social conflicts and humanitarian crisis.
The International Competition comes back with five programmes focused around five themes of great relevance for the contemporary society, challenging the viewers to debate and involvement, with a special focus on the idea of alterity, on the acute necessity for empathy, tolerance and inclusion: YOU ARE ANOTHER ME: On Exile and Shifting Borderscapes, THE POLITICS OF THE BODY: The Performative Self, SEARCHING FOR TRANSCENDENCE: Spirituality in the Digital Age, THE ALCHEMY OF THE FRAME: Deconstructing the Image, CUTTING THE CORD: Family Love and Its Discontents.
BIEFF partnerships, unique in Romania, are carried on this year with some of the most important European film festivals: Berlin International Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (internationally known as Directors’ Fortnight) of the Cannes Film Festival.
Also present this year are the award-winning shorts at most prestigious international film festivals (Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Clermont-Ferrand), or the competition You Are Another Me, screening internationally multi-awarded films.
