The project is part of a triptych of cultural documentaries, beginning with
Biserici de lemn din România / Wooden Churches in Romania (2016), to be continued with
Stories of Fortified Churches (2018).
Voivodes' Foundations. Architecture of Romanian Middle Ages will be released in theatres in the fall of this year.
The Voivodes' foundations are the main architectural monuments of the Middle Ages in the extra-Carpathian Romanian cultural space. Though there were at the time several fortresses (Hotin, Soroca, Cetatea Albă, Cetatea Sucevei), they have more of a strategic role, but they were not urban centres favouring the development of urban life and culture. The Voivodes' foundations were among the little cultural centres of the time.
“The documentary on the Voivodes churches represent the second step of a vaster project focusing upon building up a positive cultural image of Romania,” Cristina Iordache, film's producer, stated.
“This initiative has not only a historical, ethnographic and cultural value, but also an artistic one,” director Kiki Vasilescu added, who is now involved in making a fiction feature film on the values of democracy.
