“Communism – La belle époque”: exhibition of photography and film screenings

The Romanian Cultural Institute of Warsaw, the Hungarian Cultural Institute, the Czech Institute, the Slovak Institute, the Bulgarian Cultural Institute and the Wrocław Branch of the Polish Institute National Remembrance (IPN) will present, between 16 July-15 August 2016, in Wrocław, 2016 European Capital of Culture, the photography exhibition “Communism - La belle époque.
Daily life in the Eastern Bloc states in the ‘70s”, which will be accompanied by film screenings.
The screenings will include films from the communist era – TV series, feature-length films, news journals -, and is to be held at the theatre within the Stulecia Hall. The Romanian material to be presented will include the recording of the performance “2050 years since the setting up of the first centralised Dacian state”, which was held in 1980, on Bucharest National Stadium. The material was made available by the National TV Station. The performance, celebrating a fictional setting-up act, presents Burebista, one of the leaders of the Dacian tribes, as founder of “the first centralised Dacian state”. He comes across as a charismatic politician who discovers the necessity of state unity. In fact, the performance aimed at recovering a prestigious genealogy of founding heroes, ending symbolically and gloriously with Nicolae Ceauşescu, thus invoking the symbolic legitimacy of the leader, through a political project crossing over the centuries and reuniting at the same table the most prestigious figures of our national history.
The photographic materials representing Romania were made available by the Romanian National History Museum. The exhibition, open to the public until 15 august 2016, is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue, Polish-English.
