This month, Cinepub will screen two documentaries directed by Dan Alexe:
Cabal in Kabul (released online on the 10th of November) and
Howling for God (released online on the 24th of November).

On the 17th of November, starting with 7 o`clock p.m., Cinepub invites the audience to join a discussion with Dan Alexe, which will be moderated by Mihaela Dedeoglu, about literature, film and life, at the Cărturești Verona Café or online, on Cinepub.ro.
Dan Alexe writes plays (
Lumea ca spoială și împovărare, in collabroration with Luca Pițu, Ed. Opera Magna, 2012), short stories (
Miros de roșcată amară, Ed. Humanitas, 2014), cultural essays (
Dacopatia și alte rătăciri românești, Ed. Humanitas, 2015) and directed some documentaries which received important international awards.
The documentary - which for quite some time was screened in the cinemas in all the big cities in France and Belgium, - presents the life in Afghanistan after the Talibans, in a totally unconventional way. As a freelancer journalist, the author lived for a few years in Kabul and learned Farsi. Among the many topics that he learned about, it`s this one: The last two Jewish men in Kabul hate each other and they actually divided the synagogue. Isaac Levy sells amulets and recites incantations for protection against evil eye to the soldiers and the barren women. Zabulon Simantov produces alcohol under the counter and sells it to Isaac`s customers. And still, the two of them live at war.
Dan Alexe spent three years in Kabul, learned the local languages, worked by himself, with no crew: he directed it, he shot it and recorded the sound; then the entire material got stolen from a hotel room in Prague. Dan Alexe went back to Kabul, he continued to shoot for one more year and a half and he made an intimate film, full of humor and humanity, which later on received many awards at international festivals.
