Cineclub Queer – „Johnny Guitar”

Cineclub Queer organizes a screening of the feature film Johnny Guitar, made by Nicholas Ray, a film that makes a debate with the rules of the genre that it approaches the western. Starting from a narrative type that indirectly touches the myths regarding the building of America, Nicholas Ray reinterprets the distinctive features of the western in an original manner.
Considered by the film critic Roger Ebert to be more of a “psycho-sexual melodrama”, Johnny Guitar brings out the rivalry between two women: Vienna (Joan Crawford), the owner of a saloon at the edge of a community in the wild west and Emma Small (Mercedes McCambridge), the daughter of a rich cattle owner. The two of them dispute their power of influence and the financial supremacy in a small prairie town. The cover of their rivalry is represented by the economical opportunity that is represented by the building of a railway that will cross the small town.
The presence of Joan Crawford in a main part opens up a new perspective of understanding the film directed by Nicholas Ray (known for titles such as Rebel Without a Cause or Bigger Than Life) in a queer key. An icon of the LGBTQ+ community, the artistic persona and the actress` glamorous aura inspired many impersonations and drag shows on the queer stage.
The screening will take place on Thursday, March 30, from 19:00 at the Union Cinemateque; the film will be followed by a discussion with the film critics Georgiana Madin and Andrei Luca.
Cineclub Queer is a film project that means organizing two film events per month, representing the screening of queer films. By this initiative, the Cineclub Queer intends to bring to the attention of the audience a series of classical LGBTQ+ films from the world cinema (produced until 1990), with the intention of rediscovering and re-discussing a heritage that already existed in the collections of the Film National Archives and also to organize the screening of some classical queer films that have never been screened in the Romanian cinemas.
The visual of the event is made by Radu Pop.
The price of a ticket is 3 lei.
