“Cărturan”, by Liviu Săndulescu, World Premiere at Busan
Cărturan will have the world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea and the European one at the Warsaw FF in Poland and starting with November 8, 2019, it can be seen in the Romanian cinemas all over the contry. Liviu Săndulescu`s directorial feature debut will be screened during the competition of the International Film festival in Busan, one of the biggest Asian festivals. Right after, it will go straight to Poland, where it was selected in the Competition 1-2 of the 35th edition of the Warsaw International Film Festival, alongside other 13 feature films from all over the world.
In Busan, the film will compete for the Flash Forward award, one of the most valuable trophies of the 24th edition of the festival.
Started in 1985, the Warsaw Film Festival joined in 2009 the list of festivals of the A category, alongside festivals such as Cannes, Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Montreal or Berlin. The Competition 1-2 is dedicated to the film directors that are at their first or second production and it is one of the most important event if this type in the region.
Produced by Anca Puiu, the film catches the moment when the life of Cărturan, a 60 y.o. man is turned upside down when he finds out that because of a terminal illness that he had had no idea of, he has little time to live. His situation is more complicated because he has to take care of his 14 y.o.grandson. While still alive, the man needs to solve two very important things: finding a good place for his grandson to live until he`ll be able to take care of himself on his own and organizing a memorial service for his soul. This is a habit which is common in the area he comes from, but he`ll bring him to conflict with the village priest, who has a different opinion on the Christian practice. When he realizes that things aren`t going the right direction, Cărturan is forced to make some sudden choices.
The film features the actors: Teodor Corban, Adrian Titieni, Dana Dogaru, Cristina Flutur and Iulia Lumânare, and the children Vlad Popescu and Tudor Brătucu. The screenplay is written by Liviu Săndulescu and Bogdan Adrian Toma and the cinematography is signed by Oleg Mutu.
The film is a co-production Romania (Mandragora, Iadasarecasa) - Sweden (Film I Vast, Doppelganger AB), with the support of the Romanian Film Centre, the Romanian Television and Shoot&Post Auditory Sweden and it will have the Romanian premiere on November 8, 2019 and it will be distributed by Iadasarecasa.
Until November 8, the viewers will have the chance to see Cărturan in a series of previews; the first one will happen during the 10th edition of the festival Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest.
