Panorama is the BIFF section which brings to the foreground internationally acclaimed and awarded films. Here are three of the films that the festival brings this year:
Pinocchio, directed by Matteo Garrone, opens the 16 th edition of the Bucharest International Film Festival (BIFF), which will take place from August 27 to September 2.
The creator of masterpieces such as Gomorra, Reality, Tale of Tales or Dogman, Matteo Garrone comes again to the attention of the film lovers with his latest creation – Pinocchio – which stars the impeccable Roberto Benigni as Geppetto. The Italian fantasy film, written by Matteo Garrone together with Massimo Ceccherini, is based on the book written in 1883, “The Adventures of Pinocchio” written by the Italian author Carlo Collodi. Pinocchio is a very important project for Garrone, who drew the first storyboard of Pinocchio when he was 6 years old.
“I`ve been identifying with Pionocchio since I was a kid…but in time, I started turning into Geppetto, especially after becoming a father. There is something from both of them inside of me.” Matteo Garrone said.
There Is No Evil is an Iranian drama directed by Mohammad Rasoulof. The film tells four stories about the death sentence in Iran. Rasoulof explained that the film is
about “the people who take responsibility” for their actions and that each story “is based on his own experience”.
Just as his compatriot and colleague, the great director Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasoulof is forced to find new ingenious ways to make film. There Is No Evil is a
film made of a series of short films “sewn” together. It is a brave and passionate piece of work, split into four stories, which gravitate around the topic of the death
penalty in Iran.
By means of this manifesto-film, the director seems to ask the viewers a few questions: How is it possible to keep hold of the common sense, how to keep
morality and the faith in a better life when confronted with a despotic regime.
Sorry We Missed You, presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, is another attack against the British liberal system, signed Ken Loach. By means of this artistic
manifestation, the director is given, once again, the title of implacable narrator of the modern British society.
The full schedule of the festival is available on biff.com.ro and the tickets can be purchased on eventbook.ro. Next week BIFF will also reveal the official poster of this special edition.
