TIFF 2018: “Free Dacians”, by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Andrei Gorgan
by Andra Petrescu
Free Dacians / Dacii liberi, the latest documentary made by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Andrei Gorgan, touches a delicate subject – how did the Dacians become such a popular historic topic for so many Romanians? How did their history turned into a saga of the genesis of the Romanian people?
The two directors approached some people that are really passionate about tha Dacians` history – from a group that makes reenactment events, to the inhabitants of a Dacian village and to the administrator of the Sarmisegetusa Regia UNESCO site and the participants of the Dacology congresses – starting a dialogue that can help us better understand this phenomenon.
The world premiere took place during the TIFF 2018. Here we met Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan and Andrei Gorgan and we discussed at length about how they chose this topic and which were the challenges of making a film about people that are often ironized in the press.
