TIFF 2016 announces the titles of the Sections “Supernova” and “No Limit”

Political allegories, uncomfortable social and personal dramas, explosive thrillers, but also black savoury comedies, are gathered together this year in two of the most popular Sections of the Transylvania International Film Festival (27 May – 5 June, 2016): “Supernova” and “No Limit”.
“Supernova” reunites about 20 of the biggest Festival hits over the last year. Apart from the already announced Francophonie, 11 Minutes and Sunset Song, TIFF will bring to the big screen the animation Anomalisa (directed by Charlie Kaufman), Oscar nominated and distinguished with the Grand Prize of the Jury at Venice 2015, and Right Now, Wrong Then (directed by Hong Sang-soo, Golden Leopard, Locarno 2015).
Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse, for which Arnaud Desplechin got the César Trophy for directing, is a portrait of youth. Chevalier (directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari) is a savoury comedy of manners about petty male rivalry and about the big problems Greece is confronted with. Truman (directed by Cesc Gay) is an intimate tragic-comedy about the inevitable end of life and of a friendship.
Mediterranea (directed by Jonas Carpignano) is an actual film about the crisis of the illegal transportation of immigrants from Africa to Europa. Award-winner last year in Venice, Free in Deed (directed by Jeff Mahaffy) is a challenging drama where faith becomes the last refuge for those ignored by society. Remember (directed by Atom Egoyan) is a suspense-filled drama, where Christopher Plummer plays the role of a widower who survived the Holocaust and is seeking revenge, and Frenzy (directed by Emin Alper) – is an echo of the situation in Turkey and the Middle East.
Au plus près du soleil (directed by Yves Angelo) is a film noir about a couple who take extreme measures to keep away the biological mother of their adopted son.  Tempête (directed by Samuel Collardey) follows the life of a fisherman who works hard to keep the custody of his children, and The Memory of Water is the most recent melodrama signed by the Chilean Matias Bize, about a young mourning couple.
The films included under the “No Limit” Section are visceral, dramatic, spectacular or full of eroticism. Inspired from a real fact, Interrogation (directed by Vetrimaaran, Venice 2015) is an Indian extremely violent docu-drama about the police abuse of power in a case of theft. Shadow Behind the Moon (directed by Jun Rubles Lana), a dramatic roller-coaster shot in a single nocturnal take, analyses the lives of three people caught in the guerrilla war between the Philippine government and the communist resistance movement.
The experimental feature Eva Doesn’t Sleep (directed by Pablo Agüero) follows the real route of the kidnapping by the army of the body of Eva Peron, a symbol of the working class revolution in Argentina, and its hiding for 25 years in Vatican.
Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau (directed by Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau, Berlin, 2016) captures what it means to be a young gay in Europe in our age and time. A delicious South Korean film noir, Man on High Heels (directed by Jang Jin) is a parody of the policier genre where the main character, a male symbol, decides to live his life as a transsexual. For a doctor who missed on his youth, the re-discovery of the lost youth pleasures turns into a sick obsession with a tragic ending in Suntan. The sumptuous period film, The Treacherous (directed by Min Kyu-dong), was inspired by historical facts during the Joseon Dynasty, when a king was offered 10,000 women in exchange of political favours.
Baby Bump, speaking about the grotesque bodily transformation at puberty, confirms the distinct voice of director Kuba Czekaj in Polish cinema. Je me tue à le dire (directed by Xavier Seron) is an absurd dramatic comedy, where a hypochondriac young man is struck by anxiety when he finds out his mother will die soon. Distractions, directed by Aleksi Salmenperä, is a bizarre black comedy, spiced with jubilatory excesses.
