Synopsis: Bucharest 1989 - the last year of Ceausescu's dictatorship. Eva lives with her parents and her 7 year old brother, Lalalilu. One day at school, Eva and her boyfriend accidentally break a bust of Ceausescu. They are forced to confess their crime before a disciplinary committee and Eva is expelled from school and transferred to a reformatory establishment. There she meets Andrei, and decides to escape Romania with him. Lalalilu becomes convinced that Ceausescu is the main reason for Eva's decision to leave. So with his friends from school he devises a plan to kill the dictator.

Storyline

Bucureşti, 1989. Eva, fratele ei mai mic Lalalilu şi părinţii lor locuiesc într-un cartier mărginaş al capitalei. Lalilu are 7 ani şi o adoră pe Eva. Ea are 17 ani şi este pentru prima dată îndrăgostită. Viaţa Evei se schimbă însă în ziua în care ea şi Alexandru sparg în scoală, din greşeală, bustul lui Ceauşescu. Sunt prinşi şi li se cere să îşi facă autocritica în faţa adunării şcolare. Obligat de tatăl său, Alexandru se umileşte şi scapă. Eva refuză, este exmatriculată şi transferată la o şcoală profesională de la periferia oraşului. Îl părăseşte pe Alexandru şi, împreună cu Andrei, pune la cale un plan sa fugă din România. Vor să treacă Dunărea inot. Convins că numai Ceauşescu e de vină, Lalalilu, împreună cu câţiva colegi de şcoală, plănuiesc să-l omoare.

Cătălin Mitulescu despre colaborarea cu Martin Scorsese şi Wim Wenders
„Scorsese a citit scenariul, i-a plăcut. În anumite faze de lucru, s-a uitat pe brut. Neputând să fac în America un film în limba română, căci nimeni nu-ţi dădea bani pentru aşa ceva, Scorsese m-a recomandat lui Wim Wenders, care are o casă de producţie în Germania. L-am cunoscut pe el şi pe In-Ah Lee, producătoarea lui. Am rămas cu In-Ah Lee ca producător, a lucrat pentru Strada Film, iar Wenders ca producător executiv. Am făcut filmul cu francezii de la Les Pelleas Films, care ştiu să facă un film în străinătate, în altă limbă. Înţeleg altfel cinema-ul, au această cultură a filmului.” (interviu pentru revista Filmul tău
