Graduate of the “I. L. Caragiale” Institute for Theatre and Film (class of 1955), he was the rector of the university he graduated from (1976-1981), then the president of the Romanian Film Center (1967) and the General Secretary of the Filmmakers Association (ACIN) in Romania(1965-1974).

- He was married to actress Ioana Drăgan.
- They have a daughter, who is currently manager of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest.
