Dina Cocea

Daughter of writer N.D. Cocea and Florica Mille (daughter of Constantin Mille), sister of actress Tanți Cocea, sculptress Ioana Maria Cocea and Radu Cocea. Granddaughter of actresses Alice Cocea and Florica Cocea. Director Dinu Cocea is her cousin. Debut in cinema and theatre in Paris, in 1934. She returned to Romania in 1935 and performed at the "Comedy Theatre" in "The Real James", alongside George Timica, the part of dancer Yvette. In 1941, she sets up ”Our Theatre” company together with Fory Etterle, P. Nove and Eugenia Zaharia. The company closes in 1949.

Actress at the National Theatre in Bucharest. Dean of the Theatre Academy (1952-1962) and Professor of the Actor’s Art. President of the Association of Theatrical and Musical Arts Institutions (1979-1989). In 2001 she becomes a Honorary Member of the National Theatre in Bucharest. She was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Theatre and Film "I.L.Caragiale" in Bucharest, in 2002.

…about the audience: “ Many times we don’t even realize to what extent we find ourselves in the public eye. Recently somebody told me   ;”You don’t  imagine since when I’ve been knowing you! Since “ Recipe for Happiness”.I have to confess that it was a part I’d forgotten about and of no major importance for my career but the then witness reproduced my line, that of the little scoundrel I impersonated :’I’ve got no dime but I couldn’t care less…” She even remembered my gesture of turning my pockets inside out. And not only through our stage activity are we in the public eye but also through our social and private life.The posture we acquire on stage reflects on our everyday life.Many years ago I was not very attentive with what I was wearing.One day, coming from a rehearsal, my coat open, my belt hanging, a  couple stopped me: “ Are you Dina Cocea? How can you allow yourself to appear like that in the street?You don’t even  think about us, your public? We are used to see you so elegant on stage”…Yes, the audience does not forget or forgive whenever we happen to go astray…And we are not to forget that  besides the usual exchange of liking and disliking between  stage and  audience, we actors are in an permanent indirect contact with our public  in our day to day life through film, TV,  that immensely contribute to the popularity of the actor.
Personally, while on stage, I ignore the audience, I like to isolate myself, I ignore all sound which, fatally , disturbs.That’s why I like it when the curtain stays down between acts and at the end of the show as I saw in some performances abroad, when the actor does not come back on stage dressed in his character’s clothes after practically deserting his part.He only excites more the spectator’s curiosity.The eyes judge you, appreciate or depreciate you, comment on you,give you the sensation that you are in a shopwindow and I do not find it to be a pleasant sensation.Sometimes though, we take revenge.The audience’s curiosity gives us more details about its’ intentions be it good or bad.As far as I’m concerned the ideal audience is the one that gives me the impression that I perform in front of an empty hall, when all I hear is a huge silence that breathes with me”(Cinema magazine,june 1968)
