It`s “full steam ahead” at the Toronto Film Festival, according to artistic director Cameron Bailey. However, even the organizers of North America`s largest annual film festival can`t say with total certainty where they are heading exactly.
Normally, TIFF takes place at the beginning of September, with a selection of almost 300 films. Unlike other festivals which were forced to cancel or postpone their editions due to coronavirus, the TIFF team is committed to offer a new form of the event on the initially settled dates – even if that means fewer venues, smaller audiences or, worst case scenario, no activity with viewers. After working for 6 months, the team already started developing a plan B, which means a virtual edition. “Postponing is not an option now. [Based on] everything we learn, things could get worse in October or November if there is a second wave” the TIFF executive director Joana Vicente says.
