The film got the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film at the official competition of the 69th edition of the Cannes International Film Festival, being also one of the critics' favourites for the Palme D’Or Trophy.
Toni Erdmann was shot almost entirely in Romania in the summer of 2014. The film was co-produced by Komplizen Film with coop99, knm, Missing Link Films, SWR/WDR/ARTE, with the support of Film und Medienstiftung NRW, Eurimages, Deutscher Filmförderfonds, Filmförderungsanstalt, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Federal Government Representative for Culture and Media, Austrian Film Institute, Filmlocation Austria, Filmförderung Hamburg-Schleswig Holstein, Filmfernsehfonds Bayern and Media, as well as with the support of Aqua Carpatica and Domeniile Sâmburești.
