Brașov City Hall rehabilitated three cinema halls

The rehabilitation plans of two cinema halls from central Brașov – Cinema Popular and Cinema Astra – and a district one – Cinema Modern – are getting close to the finals step: giving them back to the public circuit. All of them will have the form of multifunctional halls, able to host not only film screenings, but also cultural events of other kinds. They will be added to Cinema Patria, another project of the City Hall, in the effort of reviving what used to be the film-loving cultural life from Brașov.
The mayor George Scripcaru held – one week apart – press conferences at Cinema Astra (June 17) and Cinema Modern (June 24). The work at Cinema Popular is still in progress. The due date for finalizing the rehabilitation works is September 2020.
Cinema Astra includes a screening hall (124 seats) and a conference hall (130 seats). Once finalized, the hall will be administrated by the Direction for Culture and Events o the Brașov City Hall, but the plan is to bring external administration.
Cinema Modern becomes a centre dedicated to children, with two screening halls (Hall A – 186 seats, hall B – 110 seats). The City Hall is negotiating with the German Economical Club regarding the implementation of the “Minitehnicus” neoliberal technical education project, about which Werner Braun, the Club director, declares:
“This is a project we brought to the City Hall on behalf of the German Economical Club, a different stage of our project “Fit for Future”. We intend to take care of the children from Brașov, starting with the 1 st grade, maybe even sooner, until the doctorate. “Minitehnicus” fits here very well. Our main goal is to motivate the children and help them become passionate about technics and to help them – by means of playing – get close to the modern jobs from fields such as robotics, automatization, electronics, IT, etc. These are top jobs and Brașov will definitely need qualified specialists in the future.”
No detail regarding the curatorial vision of the cinema hall was issued.
Cinema Popular will be part of the project “Cultural Park Behind the Walls”, a collaborative endeavor of the Brașov City Hall and of the AMURAL Association. The cinema hall, which will be set up to be able to host different types of events, it will have 175 seats. The possibility of some mobile projectors which may facilitate outdoor screenings was also mentioned. Carmen Zmaranda, the co-founder of the AMURAL Association, mentioned that the necessary steps will be taken, so that Cinema Popular may be enlisted in a European cinema halls network.
