The Participants of the Aristoteles Workshop #14

The 14th edition of the Aristoteles Workshop documentary film workshop selected its participants. From August 1, 2019, 12 young filmmakers with some experience in the audio-visual field, will set off on an exceptional film adventure, under the guidance of a few professionals of the international film world. For five weeks, they will go through all the production stages, exploring the surroundings of the Beliș village, in the Cluj county, in order to make four documentaries inspired by the local realities.
This year, the selection process was an extremely intense one and the number of applicants with remarkable portfolios exceeded the organizers` expectations. What is also quite surprising is the diversity of the countries in which the Workshop raised the interest of many young filmmaker. Outside the boundaries of the European continent, Aristoteles workshop attracted the attention of the filmmakers all over the world, starting with Europe and arriving in Afghanistan and North Africa, going through the US and up to India.
The participants of this year`s edition that were chosen by a commission of professionals come from Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Great Britain, Poland, Romania, United States of America, Ukraine and Hungary. During the workshop, they will form four working teams, made of three students – one director, one cinematographer and an editor – and they will have 5 weeks to work on a documentary, going through all the stages of the process, from finding the topic, to shooting the film and to the post-production stage.
The first three workshop days will be dedicated to the theoretical part. The documentary film masterclass will be held by Arne Bro, the Danish filmmaker who runs the Documentary Film and TV Studies Department of the National Film School of Denmark. Alongside, the Danish director Lotte Mik-Meyer, a documentary film and TV studies professor, will share with the participants her vast experience in the conflict areas. Invited for the first time at the Aristoteles Workshop, Isidore Bethel produced and edited films that along the years were broadcasted by the American Public Television and by MoMA. The filmmaker will guide the 12 participants in the stage of identifying the subject, supporting them in the documenting, shooting and editing stages, together with Lotte Mik-Meyer and Laurent Becue-Renard – the multi-awarded director and producer, the creator of the Genealogy of Wrath trilogy.
The participants of this year`s edition are: David Power (director, Italy), Sam Bassett (director, Great Britain), Bronte Stahl (director, USA), Vasile Todinca (director, Romania), Olya Chernykh (cinematographer, Ukraine), Maciej Thiem (cinematographer, Poland), Bence Prokop (cinematographer, Romania), Lorenzo Fabbro (cinematographer, Italy), Julia Elger (editor, Germany), Ieva Sakalyte (editor, Lithuania), Claudia Alexandru (editor, Romania), Voicu Mureșanu (editor, Romania).
The Aristoteles Workshop (AW) was created in 2006 by the producers Dan Nuțu and Cristina Hoffman, with the support of the French-German TV station Arte, in order to support a new generation of documentary filmmakers, with a previous experience in film or video production. Starting with 2018, Aristoteles Workshop is organized in partnership with the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, the Theatre and Film Faculty, the Documentary Film Master`s Studies and with cinepub.ro, the platform where the Romanian films can be seen for free and legally, all over the world.
The 14th edition of the workshop will take place from August 1 to 31, 2019, in Beliș, the Cluj county and it is financed by the Romanian Film Center, the Romanian Filmmakers Union and DAcinSara.
The technical equipment for the editing stage was offered by NOUMAX.
