High Schoolers show their support for theatre halls

The high schoolers coordinators of One World Romania at School Documentary Film Clubs initiated a support campaign for the theatre halls that were closed or are in danger of being closed.
Through photos and messages, tens of pupils from all over the country expressed their solidarity with Constantin Curelea, manager of the former Sebastian Papaiani theatre hall. They ask that the decision to close theatre halls be revised. Their messages read like this: “STOP bankrupting culture!” and „Films open our minds. You close cinemas.”
Last week, 5 theatre halls were closed in the country: Sebastian Papaiani  (Pitești), Modern (Craiova), Republica (Iași), Dacia (Baia Mare and Central (Brăila), and the employees were laid off. Of the 400 cinemas active in 1990, today only 8 are still functional, being subordinated to RADEF Romania Film.
Roxana Caia, a pupil from Bucharest, stated: “I am among the coordinators of One World Romania at School Clubs and this makes me happy for several reasons, among them being the fact that we are able to launch a manifest. We want the decision to close independent theatre halls revised. We want investments to be made in their development, in bringing back to life cinemas outside Malls.”
Several hundred kilometres up North, Diana Smeu has another perspective on things: “Today's teenagers of Bacău did not grow up with a theatre hall in their town.  I think this was a great injustice to them, being absolutely bombarded by Hollywood mainstream and having no other way of alternative growth, with good films that, unfortunately but also fortunately can only be seen in cinemas. It is important for all of us to take a stand and to contribute to the movement that intends to change the great injustice done to us every day and which we cannot bear around us. This question remains: Where do we want to breathe? Inside or at the cinema's gates?”.
