As of today, January 17, the film lovers are expected to come to Elvire Popesco Cinema for the
Oscar Weekend opening, the event that for 5 years has brought to Bucharest films that were proposals for the Oscars, for the Best Foreign Film category. The Oscar Weekend will last for four days until January 20, 2019. You can find the tickets on Eventbook.ro and at the cinema ticket booth.
The Oscar Weekend starts at 18:30 with the screening of the film
Zimna wojna/Cold War, directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, and it is followed
Donbass, directed by Serghei Loznitsa.
Cold War has the force of the classical Polish cinema and it was considered a favorite for the foreign film Oscar award even before the film being officially nominated by Poland;
this is what we read in The guardian. The film is distributed in Romania by Independența Film.
Donbass speaks about this region in the east of Ukraine where some conflicts took place between Ukrainian nationalists and supporters of the Popular Republic Donetk, a proto-state supported by Russia. In 13 chapters, the author makes the portrait of a society that for many years suffered of manipulation and propaganda. The film is distributed by Digital Cube.
The second day of the Oscar Weekend brings the proposal of Denmark to this year`s Academy Awards and challenges the viewers to watch a race against the clock in which the main character is caught, after he received a phone call from the Emergency Hospital.
Den skyldige, directed by Gustav Möller is distributed by Bad Unicorn.
Girl, directed by Lukas Dhont,
is the proposal coming from Belgium. The film tells Lara`s story, who dreams of becoming a professional ballerina. Victor Polster, the leading actor, received the Cannes award for acting.
On Saturday, Romania`s proposal for the Oscars:

The Oscar Weekend will end on Sunday with the films
Shoplifters, Capharnaüm, Napszállta/Sunset and
Gräns/Border. The film
Napszállta, László Nemes` latest film, which features the Romanian actor
Vlad Ivanov alongside Levente Molnár, the star from
Saul fia, will be screened starting with 17:45.
Border, Ali Abbasi`s film will be the last screening of the evening. Variety says about this film that “it is a captivating mixture of romantic film, Northern noir, social realism and fantastic horror, which defies and turns over the conventions of the genre”.
