Bucharest International Dance Film Festival 2019 Is About to Start

On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, the 5th edition of the Bucharest International Dance Film Festival will start. Five days of special screenings, cine(dance)concert with archive films international and national short film competitions, as well as masterclasses with renown guests.
The theme of the fifth edition of BIDFF – The Network – shows the growing of the festival and it marks the beginning of a new development stage. On the one hand the official programming integrates films of different genres for different audience categories made by film directors, choreographers, visual artists, animators and musicians. On the other hand, it initiates a lab for developing film projects which are in the first creation stage.
And Then We Danced, a Swedish-Georgian-French co-production from 2019, directed by Levan Akin, which represents Sweden`s proposal for the Oscar Awards, is the film which will open the fifth edition of BIDFF. The screening will take place in the presence of the protagonist Levan Gelbakhiani and of the producer Ketie Danelia.
A portrait of a conservative society which drives off or ignores its citizens who don`t follow “the tradition”, And Then We Danced tells the story of Merab, a dancer who tries really hard to distinguish himself in the national ensemble that he is a part of and to work his way towards a better future that could place him above the mediocrity and the poverty that surround him.
Besides the 43 short films from 18 countries all over the world that entered the three competitions – international, national and musicals – a series of special events in the Romanian cinema world will take place.
The festival ends with the screening of the documentary Maguy Marin: L'urgence d'Agir, directed by David Mambouch, which presents the life of Maguy Marin – one of the most important choreographers of the world stage.
The events will take place at the French Institute – Elvire Popesco Cinema, the Peasant Museum Cinema, Fabrica Gastropub, LINOTIP – Choreography Independent Center, Apollo 111 and the National Dance Center of Bucharest.
