Golden Shorts: Best Films in Major Festivals at BIEFF 2017

BIEFF (March 28 – April 2nd, 2017) showcases a unique programme dedicated to short films which have received in 2016 awards such as the Palme d’Or in Cannes, The Orizzonti Award in Venice or The Pardino d’Oro in Locarno.
Golden Shorts: Best Films in Major Festivals is scheduled on Saturday, April 1st, starting at 9:00 pm and on Sunday, April 2nd, starting at 6:00 pm at Elvire Popesco Cinema.
Timecode (directed by Juanjo Giménez), winner of the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film last year in Cannes, employs a surprising twist of perspective, as it transforms the unidirectional surveillance cameras into instruments of communication and liberation.
Winner of the Best Short Film Orizzonti Award in Venice, The Lost Voice (directed by Marcelo Martinessi) tackles a topic from the recent history of Paraguay: the 2012 Curuguaty massacre, an event which triggered political chaos and the removal of the president in-office.
Winner of the Golden Leopard for Best Short Film in Locarno and nominated for the 2016 European Film Academy Awards, The Fullness of Time (Romance) (directed by Manon Coubia) revolves around a woman who has spent most of her lifetime waiting for the eternal snows to melt so that she can recover the body of her husband, a mountain climber who had died in an accident during an ascent of the Mont Blanc.
Nominated for the 2017 European Film Academy Awards by the Berlinale, The Artificial Humors (directed by Gabriel Abrantes) craftily combines thoughts on anthropology, a portrayal of the indigenous community’s way of life and the idiosyncrasies of artificial intelligence.
Eden’s Edge (Three Shorts on the Californian Desert), directed by visual artists Gerhard Treml and Leo Calice and winner of the Grand Prix Lab Competition in Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, is a film that rejects formal and narrative stereotypes and which instead focuses on a not so sunny side of California, distancing itself from more common ways of approaching this American territory in cinema.
Additionally, BIEFF 2017 will be hosting the annual Meet the Experts panel, The Lifespan of Cinematic Experimentation, held by the jury members of the festival’s international competition: Nora Molitor, Paolo Moretti and Călin Dan. The event will take place on Saturday, April 1st, starting at 4:30 pm, in the foyer of the French Institute in Bucharest. The admission is free of charge, subject to availability. Those interested in participating are asked to confirm their attendance by sending an e-mail to pr@bieff.ro. Read more about the three experts here.
