Films about Romania in the competition of UrbanEye 2016


     UrbanEye Film Festival was held this year between 16-20 November, at Cinema Elvira Popescu and Cinematheque Eforie, the competition bringing the Bucharest-based audience films approaching subjects related to urban architectural realities in Romania.
     9 short and medium-length films entered the race for the UrbanEye Award, among them being features on the reconstruction of Matache area in Bucharest, on the last Saxon key holder from a Transylvanian village, or on the pogrom in Iași.
     Ia Altitudine (2015 | 25 min | Romania | doc | DIRECTED BY: Olimpiu Vuia) follows the building up of a new mountain shelter in Făgăraș Mountains, Giant (2014 | 13 min | Finland | doc | DIRECTED BY: Tykkä Hall) enters into the famous gymnastic training halls of Deva, and White Is the New White (2016 | 25 min | Romania | doc | DIRECTED BY: Mihnea Rareș Hanțiu) presents the re-hauling of a communist factory into an art space.
     Matache - Berzei / Buzești (2016 | 84 min | Romania | doc | DIRECTED BY: Dragoș Lumpan) follows the transformation of the Matache Area in Bucharest, Blocul/The Block (2016 | 61 min | Romania | doc | DIRECTED BY: Maria Șalaru) tells the story of a block's superintendent in his efforts to mediate the relations between neighbours and Up Stairs( 2016 | 15 min | Romania | doc | DIRECTED BY: Alina Ușurelu) is an experimental dance film.
     The leading character in The Last Key Holder (2016 | 6 min | Poland | doc | DIRECTED BY: Dorota Mazur) is an old Saxon from Transylvania, who keeps the keys of the village church, The Marble Village (2011 | 21 min | Anglia | doc | DIRECTED BY: Ioana Dorobanțu) is a film about the exodus from the Romanian villages, and Iași Memories (2016 | 54 min | France | doc | DIRECTED BY: Romulus Balazs) reconstructs, with the aid of photos, the route of the pogrom in Iași.
     The UrbanEye 2016 Award went to Romulus Balazs, for Iași Memories, while The Marble Village received a special mention.
     The jury granting the Best Film Award was made up of Ileana Bârsan (critic and cinema educator), Manuel Toledo Otaegui (founder of Arqfilmfest Santiago, Chile and founder of ArchFilmFest London) and Dorin Ștefan (architect). The award ceremony was held on Saturday, at 19:15.
