fARAD Announces the Theme of the 2019 Edition and a New Artistic Director

After five years in which her curatorial expertise established the profile of the fARAD International Documentary Film festival, Mona Nicoară, the artistic director and co-founder of the festival, hand on the torch. The participative and intellectual identity of the event, the experimental an daring profile of the themes and of the programming, the quality of the guests and last but not least, the initiative and the coordinating of the fARAD Laboratory,  were mostly due to Mona, who now choses other new professional challenges.
The new fARAD artistic director is Dimitris Kerkinos, an acclaimed name in the European film industry and a very experimented curator of documentary films. Having been involved for 20 years in the team of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, from 2002 he is the programmer of the Balkan Survey section dedicated to the most important films in the region. During the years, he organized many special programs, among which retrospectives dedicated to the Romanian films and filmmakers Alexandru Solomon and Mircea Daneliuc. Dimitris is also the artistic director of the International Documentary Film Festival in Thessaloniki. He wrote many film essays and monographies.  In 2019 he was a member of the jury of the Romanian Film Days section at TIFF.
The 6th edition of fARAD will take place from October 2 to 6 and like every year, the festival will explore different film forms of representing reality, united under the theme Map and Territories.
“The program is similar to a travelling diary, inspired by the inhabited space, as the field of human interaction. Even if they speak about big urban centres, small rural areas, or simply about territories where people live their lives, the selected films build a complex reflection of the relationships between city, space, archiotecture, urbanization, geography and society” Dimitris Kerkinos says. Then he adds: “paraphrasing the famous Le Corbusier phrase, who saw the house as a machine for living in, we can also say that in its turn, the city is also a machine for living in; the question is how the people reside in it and how they relate to it and most of all, how this specific habitat moulds mentalities, values and ways of thinking?”
The full program of the festival will be announced at the beginning of September.
“Thought as a mere documentary film festival with a special profile, fARAD becomes  more and more a professionalizing space which raises the Arad audience`s awareness of the art film and also a meeting space for debate and ideas confrontation regarding the way in which art reflects these times, which are more and more challenging, both morally and existentially, that we live”, Corina Șuteu, the festival director says.
Started and developed as an event dedicated to the audience education through image, but also to revitalizing the interest for the art film, fARAD was launched in 2014, at the initiative of Corina Șuteu and of Film ETC, in collaboration with the Arad Cultural Municipal Centre.. The festival is under the patronage of the Arad City Hall and it is produced and curated by the ETC Film Association (general producer – Oana Radu and programming consultant Mihai Chirilov), in partnership with 111 Film (Eugen Lumezianu).
