Film Critics Association 2015 Award for Best Film Journalism

Events and sections of Astra Film Festival 2017

The 24th Edition of Astra Film Festival is to take place from 16 to 22 October 2017, in Sibiu. Over 2,000 films from 73 countries were entered this year, and the audience will have to choose from a selection of the best 100 documentaries recently produced in Romania and world-wide.
The films of the AFF 2017 programme seem to be a documentary cinema regale, with productions of 30 countries presenting realities of 50 countries. The titles are grouped in several thematic areas: Identity Journeys, Against the Current, Romania in short, Focus on Norway, In Somebody Else's Country, Europe from Profile, Urban Landscapes or Vestiges of Great Illusions. The jury made up of 13 industry professionals will decide on the films to be included in the 5 competition sections of the festival: International, Romania, Central and Eastern Europe, Student and Shorts.
“At this year's edition, novel events will put under the spotlight even unknown aspect of the documentary cinema. Considering the success registered by fiction films with a documentary-realistic approach, this year we bet on a surprise fiction film to be internationally premiered and officialy released at AFF Sibiu,” Dumitru Budrala, director of the Festival, stated.
The new forms of cinema, Full Dome and VR, will be for the second year a prominent presence in the centre of Sibiu offering the audience the experience of these new forms of cinema's technologies and the opportunity to discover the most varied and rich virtual cinema program, both being a unique experience in Romania.
At DOC TALK, Professor Bill Nichols, one of the most important theoreticians of the documentary cinema study, Head of the Cinema Department of San Francisco State University and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Documentary Film Institute, will analyse in front of the Festival viewers the film Grizzly Man, directed by Werner Herzog.
“POST TRUTH TOOLS” Programme – 3 films, a Panel talk, and a masterclass – will bring the latest news and unknown aspects of some burning themes in the Post-Truth era: the false news issue and the documentaries' truthfulness.
